SEPTEMBER MEETING

The September meeting of the Long Eaton & District Horticultural Society is the night we hold our “Oscars” ceremony for, the prize-winners of our annual show. Members arrived early to be sure of securing their seats, as these is always well attended and indeed, well before the meeting was due to begin, almost every seat was taken.

Opening the proceeds, Chairlady Joan Roadley extended a welcome greeting to everyone, and began club news by giving a brief resume of the Annual show. She said that, although some of the Chrysanthemum classes were down by a few entries, mainly due to the weather, the standard of exhibits was first class, and there was much to see and enjoy with many flowers, the fruit classes were excellent, and the exhibits for all the other sections created lots of interest . She continued by giving thanks to all the committee, members and volunteers who gave their help, and also their weekend to take part in the many and varied duties, which help to create a show of prestige and reputation.
A reminder was given that next month is a member’s only Chrysanthemum, Apple and Pot plant show, held at the Moorlands club. The presentation was to have been taken by Ida Leyland, our longest serving member, but sadly,


she was taken into hospital the previous day, so President Arthur King agree to do the honours instead. and Edger Spencer won the Nora Hudson Trophy for Wine Joan Roadley was given a cup for culinary, and Ted Hall won the Cup for his roses.. James West won the novice trophy for fuchsias, and Lyndon Clements won two awards for Fuchsias and the National Vegetable society Medal, and Colin Pattinson won the Fuchsia Society bronze medal.
In the Dahlia section, Ian Sutton won the Novice Trophy, and M Walker received a cup and a medal. For Chrysanthemums, Mr M Hogg won a Silver Medal, a Silver Bowl and a Trophy and . Michael Henson was awarded the Buckley Challenge Bowl. The Garden News Trophy for pot plants went to Brian Armstrong, and Peter Harvey won the Vic Taylor Trophy for Begonias.
For fruit, Maurice Allsopp won the 75th Year Shield, and Fruit Trophy and the Onion Trophy were both won by B and M Hobby. The McCracken Silver Chalenge Cup went to D. Vranch, and finally, David Jamson won the Worth Silver challenge Trophy and the R.H S Banksian Medal. Each winner given a round of applause, and Arthur was thanked for stepping in at short notice
