A thief jumped into a council van and drove off while the driver was delivering wheelie bins.

The driver was unloading the bins at the rear of the vehicle when he heard the doors slam at the front. The thief drove off before the driver could reach the front of the van.

The incident occurred at 10.15am on Wednesday August 7th on Thirlmere Road, Long Eaton.

The white hire van carried a 61 registration plate and is still missing.

A spokesman for Erewash Borough Council confirmed that the driver is an employee but the authority did not wish to comment on the incident.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101.
