Mystery surrounds the death of a Long Eaton woman who’s body was found in the Erewash Canal on Tuesday. Mary Gerard had been drinking in the Harrington Arms on the corner of Leopold Street on Monday afternoon and after refusing to share a taxi with another regular left at around 6.30. At that time it was still broad daylight and another regular said they had seen her walk past the steps to the canal and down to Fletcher Street. Mary’s body was found in the canal by a dog walker at 7.30am on Tuesday. Mary, 64, who had just returned from a holiday in Egypt lived in a flat on Regent Street and was a regular customer at both the Harrington and Brennans. On Wednesday flowers had been placed on the bridge and at the side of the canal where the body had been discovered. An inquest will be opened early next week.
