An inquest has been held into the death of a man at Long Eaton Railway Station last July. The man Martin Symms 49, of Sawley Marina, was hit by the train at 11.15am on Wednesday July 17th 2013. He suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on the platform who heard Mr Symms say: "I've had enough – I'm going to end it." tried to talk him out of it but he walked on to the track and stood in a crucifix position in front of an approaching train. Louise Pinder, assistant coroner at Derby and South Derbyshire Coroner's Court concluded that Mr Symms death was suicide. A report from Mr Symms GP said he was suffering mental health issues which were caused by alcohol. A British Transport Police officer said the train driver had been badly affected by what had happened but there was nothing more he could have done.
