An on-demand FREE garden waste collection during the winter months for all Erewash residents looks certain to get the go-ahead this week. Erewash borough councillors are expected to approve the new service at a meeting of Council Executive on Thursday, with the collection offered as a trial as part of the popular free bulky waste collections.
The council’s brown bin collections always finish for the winter from early December and restart in March - but councillors recognise that unpredictable weather means some residents may still be gardening during this time. If given the green light, the winter service will be on offer to residents as soon as the regular brown bin collections have ended, meaning gardeners can make use of the free collections from Monday 15th December.
Residents will be able to telephone the council in advance to request a collection of their garden waste and this will be arranged free of charge. Householders will be allowed one per fortnight on their normal collection day, although the service will be suspended during Christmas and New Year week in line with all bulky waste collections - residents are required to request the new service at least 24 hours before their normal collection day. Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment, says:
“This trial is aimed at providing a hassle-free service to all those keen gardeners in our borough who get out in their gardens during the winter if the weather permits. We don’t know how big the demand will be, but our message is clear . . . the regular brown bin collections may have ended, but we can still arrange a FREE collection of your garden waste if you need us.”
If approved, the service will be monitored over this winter to assess the overall demand and cost. The council’s free bulky waste service was introduced at the start of this financial year and has been a big hit with residents across Erewash, with more than 3,200 collections made between 1st April and 31st October.
