Erewash Borough Council’s licensing team and its Neighbourhood Wardens staged a joint patrol recently to check out scrap metal collectors operating in the borough. The exercise was carried out after the council received calls from the trade asking it to clamp down on unlicensed collectors working in the area.
A patrol of the borough discovered one unlicensed collector working around the Borrowash and Breaston areas. This collector has been sent a letter warning them that legal action will be taken if they collect in the borough again without gaining the proper licence. A second collector was also contacted after the licensing team was given information on an unlicensed collection taking place in Briar Gate, Long Eaton. The council has since received a licence application from this collector. Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment, says:
“We are grateful to those collectors who are properly licensed and for their help in letting us know when rogue scrap metal collectors are operating in the borough. Further spot checks will be carried out as and when required to target these unlicensed collectors.”
