Tony and Jordan Slater of College Street, Long Eaton, were putting up fence panels in Cavendish Close, Shardlow, when Tony’s spade struck a metal object. The object turned out to be a mortar shell from the Second World War. The discovery was made shortly after 11.30am on Tuesday March 17th. A spokesman from the bomb squad said that the fuse had gone and that it was perfectly safe. In the meantime the area had been cordoned off and residents on Cavendish Close, Long Row and Wilne Lane were moved to the Clock Warehouse pub in Shardlow. Customers in the Malt Shovel and the New Inn, were also evacuated. The cordon was lifted at 1pm.
