Police in Derbyshire have issued reassurance to pet owners that Facebook rumours are untrue. The rumours that are circulating on social media suggest that pets are being stolen after chalk or paint marks have been seen outside houses. Police want to stress that there have been no reports of thefts linked to these marks and no increase in the theft of dogs. So far this year there have only been two recorded incidents of dog theft from properties. A spokesman said: “We have received dozens of reports of suspicious marks on walls or doors but no-one has told us of any thefts. Our advice is that dog owners shouldn’t worry but should always be vigilant about the safety of their pets. It’s also a good idea to microchip animals so they can be reunited with their owners if they get lost or are stolen.”
