Mary Johnson was 100 years old on Monday 27th July. Mary resides in a Nursing Home in Risley. Originally from County Mayo, Ireland Mary is the eldest child of four. She left Ireland around 1936 to train as a nurse in London at St James Hospital, Balham. It was there when she met her husband to be Kenneth whom she married in Cape Town, South Africa in 1940. They settled in Rhodesia, now Zambia where Ken worked as a Methodist Minister. They had four children. Mary acted as minister’s wife running the household and dispensary for sick Africans and of course bringing up their children. In her later career Mary returned to nursing working at Ruddington Hall, a small community hospital serving 75 patients and later became a Macmillan nurse. We would like to wish her many happy returns.
